The programme covered plenary sessions addressing the international perspectives and findings from the Irish Hospice Foundation palliative care action research projects in Heart Failure and Respiratory Disease. In the afternoon the concurrent workshops in dementia, heart failure and respiratory disease gave delegates the opportunity to focus specifically on the application of palliative care for these particular diseases. 175 delegates attended representing a cross section of health care professionals, and due to space restrictions unfortunately we were not able to register all those interested in attending. IHF was involved with the development of a number of initiatives for children’s palliative care services Including ; • Driving the first nationwide study on the end-of-life care needs of children, with the Department of Health & Children, resulting in the development of government policy on children’s palliative care in 2010 • Being part of the National Development Committee responsible for the implementation Government’s national policy on children’s palliative care • IHF funded 85% of the start-up costs of the Children’s Care Programme – which includes a team of Children’s Outreach Nurses and Ireland’s only Paediatric Consultant specialising in Children Palliative Care • Funding Children’s Oncology Liaison Nurse at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital for 12 years • Fund a night nursing service for families to allow children with terminal illnesses at remain at home • Along with Laura Lynn, Ireland’s Children’s Hospice, undertook two assessments of the respite needs of children with life-limiting conditions initially in the North-East and Midlands (2011), followed by a national respite needs assessment published in March 2013.
