Thérèse Brady was motivated to establish the course as she believed children were ‘forgotten mourners’ and their needs were not sufficiently met through counselling and bereavement services. To address this gap, psychologists, educators, health and social care professionals required adequate training to understand and support bereaved children. The course was designed to upskill those who work with children experiencing loss. Thérèse Brady taught the first course in 1994. The course is accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, who continue to provide accreditation. Since 1994 the course has expanded and developed over the years.
