The Professional Certificate in Children and Loss was established by Thérèse Brady in 1994. Thérèse was the honorary Director of the Irish Hospice Foundation Bereavement Service.
Thérèse Brady was motivated to establish the course as she believed children were ‘forgotten mourners’ and their needs were not sufficiently met through counselling and bereavement services. To address this gap, psychologists, educators, health and social care professionals required adequate training to understand and support bereaved children. The course was designed to upskill those who work with children experiencing loss. Thérèse Brady taught the first course in 1994.
The course is accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, who continue to provide accreditation.
Since 1994 the course has expanded and developed over the years. It has run at full capacity each year with over 500 graduates completed up to 2015.
